Lady Marlins pull big upset to take Gray Man Title

The girls came out strong in the four team Gray Man Xmas tournament. Starting on Friday night in front of a big crowd the Marlins sent a message with a 44-28 victory against local rival Archabald Rutledge Academy. The Marlins were led by Jenny Derrrick who had 18 ptis and Stella FOrd who found her touch with 11pts. Allston Pate also chipped in with 6pts and 10 rebounds. That win took the Marlins to the finals against 2A Carolina Academy, the Bobcats were convincing in the first round with a 30 pt victory. The championship could not of started any better for the Marlins scoring the first 13 points but the talented and deep Bobcats came back and cut into the lead to trim in to 19-15 at the half.  The Marlins perserved and showed the composure in the second half through 5 technical fouls on Carolina Academy, which helped the Marlins stay close, But still down 7 points with just over 2 minutes to play the girls showed their true colors and went on an 11-0 run to win the game and the title, 46-42. They were led by all tournament and heart of the team Sister Donkle and the inside presence of tourny MVP Jenny Derrick. Sis finished with 15 points in the victory. It was a true team effort and backed up what the boys did in soccer, keeping the Gray Man Trophy at home! The girls have won three in a row counting a 51-39 beating of Palmetto Christian earlier in the week.

The boys team showed some great progress disposing of ARA in the first round on Friday. Led by All tourny Ben Laflour and a real team effort spurred on by Captain Allston Lumpkin the Marlins cruised to a 52-30 victory. The championship game was set versus Carolina Academy and the tired Marlins playing the 4th game fo the week, ran out of gas at the end in a nip and tuck battle that was tied with just 2 minutes to play.  The Bobcats hit some clutch shots to pull away at the end. The boys are 4-2 with a lot to look forward to in the future.
